Alan
Kaufman has more than 25 years of book publishing legal expertise and a
thorough knowledge of the business of the book industry. Immediately prior
to entering private practice Mr. Kaufman had been for 20 years Senior Vice-President
and General Counsel for Penguin Books where he was responsible for all of
Penguin's legal matters and as a member of Penguin's Board of Directors
and Executive Committee he was responsible for the business management of
Penguin. Mr. Kaufman focuses on publishing and related media, the negotiation
and drafting of publishing, licensing, and distribution agreements, trademark,
copyright and libel counseling (including manuscript review), general business
and corporate counseling (including human resources, antitrust, mergers
and acquisitions), litigation management and counseling.
Mr. Kaufman is an active member of the Intellectual Property Bar, having served on both the Copyright Committee and the Entertainment Law Committee of the New York Bar Association, the Copyright Society, and the Copyright Committee, Freedom to Read and Lawyers committees of the Association of American Publishers. He serves as Counsel to the American Book Producers Association, the trade organization of book packagers. He sits on the Advisory Boards of The Beacon Press and Hudson Hills Press, LLC. He is a contributor to "Booknews," published by the American Book Producers Association, "Novelist, Inc." "Poets and Writers", "Publishers Marketing Association" magazines. Mr. Kaufman is a graduate of American University (BA), and The Washington College of Law at American University (JD), and New York University (LL.M). |
